Quick Thought Experiment: If 100 of the leading Christian apologists were born and raised in a Muslim country, what percent, do you believe, would have risked death to convert to Christianity? While a majority would simply assert that they “would have known” that Jesus Christ was the only way, that is just wishful thinking on their part. The majority of them would be devout Muslims and praising Allah five times a day.

Hinduism, the world’s oldest religion, is, except for a few sects, not exclusivist. Most followers of Eastern religions are not. For example, there are millions of Buddhists who would also consider themselves followers of Confucianism or Taoism (which are not really religions but philosophies on life).

Buddhist religious exclusivism may be seen in the implication that those who do not accept the teachings of the Buddha, such as the Eightfold Path, are destined to repeat the cycle of suffering through endless reincarnations while those who practice the true way, can reach enlightenment. Neo-Buddhist groups sometimes consider their tradition the true path to enlightenment and engage in strong evangelical efforts to influence those they consider to be in darkness. Several sects associated with Nichiren Buddhism may be included in this category.

In terms of absolute numbers, irreligion (aka non-believers, atheists, agnostics, and Secular Humanists) appears to be increasing, however it is decreasing percentage-wise worldwide due primarily to population increases in more-religious developing countries outpacing population growth (or decline) in less-religious developed countries. In other words, more secular families have fewer children (Damnation by Over Population) also (Damnation by Birth Control).
